Can you help id this snake?

Postby DGS » Mon Jul 01, 2013 9:11 pm

We found this snake on our farm in Brits, North West. It was underground in the farm bank that became exposed when the dam had to be repaired. Any idea what type of snake it is?

Very hard to be certain with this picture but most likely a Red-lipped Herald snake. Has a temper but otherwise not dangerous to humans.

Thank you for the suggestion - the farm manager was battling to get a better picture being slightly nervous! Are there any distinguishing marks or characteristics we can look out for to be positive about the identification?

I would also say Red-lipped Snake (C. hotamboeia).

Look at the lips, they should be red to orange or alternatively a light grey to white depending on locale. The white speckles on the back are also characteristic of juveniles of this species.

1:2 Dasypeltis scabra

And yes they are all on permit.

The picture isn't so clear but as chameleon company stated from thenwhite speckles on its back I would have to say it's a red lipped herald. Harmless to humans.
