sealer question

sealer question

Postby geckolover » Tue Jun 18, 2013 9:09 pm

Hi all

I'am going to start building a vivarium soon,
either chipboard or melamine
and confused about few thing's
Or do i need to paint the entire inside with a sealer?
Is Woodoc 50 Exterior marine sealer the right one?
And once the sealer has dryed out after a few days is it safe to place a heatpad inside the cage?
Or just uses marine silicone on inside?

Use marine silicone and seal the edges of the cage as well as the corners. Just make sure the silicone you're using is capable to take the heat you want. It dries out quickly and it's not toxic to animals as the name implies 'marine silicone' which is used for sealing of aquariums(fish tanks). Melamine would be the most cost efficient and doesn't rot as easily as other wood.

Are you going to house all 4 geckos in one enclosure or build a vivarium for each gecko? If so I have a few questions, what are the sex of the geckos? What are the dimensions of the enclosure? Are you planning on breeding the geckos if you have males and females? If you don't want to use tubs, there is always aquariums/fish tanks, but like you said, you already have the rails and other peaces.

1 male will be housed alone and 3 females are living together at the moment, read an article of female geckos end up killing there housemate so I may decided on housing them separately.
On cage dimensions I'm thinking either 500w x 600l or 800l x 450w, 750l x 500w, 900l x 450. (The american size is 760l x 350w for a gecko)
On the subject of breeding I would like to try it once after there i will probably not breed them anymore. Also breeding depends on if i can change them from cricket to roaches and for same reason none of them like mealworm :smt009 .
And all i need to get now is the wood and the glass, sealant stuff if i need it.

Yes, just treat it.

You could paint it or varnish it.

Just make sure it's a non-toxic paint.
