Feeding a small T

Feeding a small T

Postby Zohar » Wed Oct 09, 2013 1:17 pm

How do I go about feeding a .5cm orange tree spider? I cut a piece of a mealworm and dropped in into the vial but the spider stays at the top of the vial, I doubt it knows that it has food. Can a feed ordinary black ants that I find around the house? They move around continuously so it might get the spiders attention. Any help will be appreciated.

Ants will not do...Best is to get the small Pin head crickets. Ants will unfortunately shred your spidey.

You can also try fruit flys, just place a piece of apple or banana in a jar with some holes in the top and wait an hour or two there will be loads of them.
Its how iv'e been feeding my baby mantids.

I would stay away from ants, the ants might have picked up or walked through pesticides and the ants will be far too small for 5cm spider.

I would advise you to get crickets or roaches, you will have more chance of your spider catching and eating the prey item.

If the spider has constructed a home then you can drop the prey item into the entrance of the burrow.
You can do this with the mealworm just have to drop it right by the spider and leave it overnight.

but again I would advise to feed live prey items, like crickets and roaches.

Just close the lid on half a mealworm.
If I'm gonna be an old, lonely man, I'm gonna need a thing, you know, a hook, like that guy on the subway who eats his own face. So I figure I'll be Crazy Man with a Snake, y'know. Crazy Snake Man. And I'll get more snakes, call them my babies, kids won't walk past my place, they will run. "Run away from Crazy Snake Man, " they'll shout!”

The advice I have given above applies to smaller spiders as well.

I would say giving the sling Live food has more chance of attracting attention to itself by movement, eventually the sling will feel the vibrations of something tugging on it webbing and go down to investigate, if it is the vials I'm thinking of there is not much space for the prey item to get away.

If you have a small pair of tweezers you can drop the prey item directly in front of the sling or touch the front legs and the sling should take the prey item.

I normally re-house eggs with legs to first instr in their own deli cups and I have not had any issue with them not finding the prey item.

Seems like my idea to feed the small black ants worked! It took all of a half second for the tiny T to catch the ant.

I have tried all of this but it doesn't work. But it is catching the ants really fast and seems to be enjoying it.
