Tortoise in JHB?

Postby ColeGP » Wed Nov 27, 2013 9:39 am

Hi guys,

I am looking at getting a tortoise in jhb.
I can see that some types are illegal, and some can be kept with a permit though.

Can anyone point me in the direction of somebody in JHB who is a legal "breeder" and advise on how to go about applying for a permit?
Any guidance on what totroises / turtles are legal with a permit in jhb would be much appreciated as I haven't seen anything that exactly covers that comprehensively.

Thanks
Colin

I might be wrong but from what I know you can't get permits for indigenous tortoises in Guateng.
I am not to sure about exotic tortoises.

In JHB all exotic tortoises would be illegal. You can apply for a single Leopard tortoise if your property is approved by Nature Conservation. You can ask JHB zoo if they have any excess tortoises. If they do have and can give you a letter stating that then contact Gauteng Nature Conservation and apply for a permit. They will do an inspection and if you are approved they will issue you with a permit.
It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Those who are afraid to ask are ashamed of learning.

Thanks Bushviper, so nobody in jhb actually breeds them for sale?

Will see what the zoo has to say.
