Please ID this Tortoise

Postby JonathanFourie » Sun Feb 23, 2014 5:31 pm

Hi Gals and Guys,

I need assistance in identifying the tortoise. This guy was found by my kids in the garden, which is very strange, as our garden is enclosed, and it would be difficult to get in to our garden. We live in Clubview, Centurion.

Some more info required too please...

Is this tortoise Indigenous/exotic?
Am I allowed to keep it? (I would like to for my children's sake)
What can I feed it?
If I am not allowed to keep it, who can I get in touch with to take off my hands? (Pretoria zoo perhaps?)

Herewith the gallery ....

Thanks in advance for the info and your time

That is a hingeback tortoise and is indigenous in your area. This one might have been translocated. Either way you are not supposed to keep it. You can drop it off at Pretoria Zoo if you wish.

Thanks, I will make a plan, perhaps I will try get it there this weekend...
What should I feed it in the meantime?
Do you know of anyone that I should chat to there?

Thanks

It will feed on any vegetable matter like carrots and even Mulberry leaves.

Sorry I dont have a name of someone to talk to.

Okay obviously it was "bring an idiot to work day". Please post the entire conversation with times and dates here and I will make sure this gets taken care of.

You can also just take the tortoise to "Bester Birds and Animals" just off the N4 and they will take it.

Apologies for the delayed response.

After getting in touch with the zoo, someone else was able to assist. The tortoise was "donated" to the zoo, where a hospital worker came to collect from the gate
All's well that ends well, except for the sad children.

Thanks for the assistance
