Ball Python Enclosure

Postby AshSmulian » Sat Aug 30, 2014 5:33 pm

Hi everyone,

I am going to be getting my first snake. A 150g, male Ball Python, he is about 6 months old.
I just need some advice on tub size for him. Ive read that hatchlings need something like 40cm x 25cm.
I have gone out and bought a 40cm x 27.4cm tub. Ive drilled breathing holes etc. I have newspaper as the substrate, a smallish water bowl and a ice cream tub turned upside down as a hide. I still need to find a heat pad. Im not sure where to find one. The pet shops in my area don't really have reptiles supplies.
Also is Mulch bedding ok for Ball Pythons?

Please advise me about enclosure sizes and when I need to upgrade to a bigger tub etc.

Thanks in advance(: !

That's great news.
The tub should be fine for now.
It depends which species the mulch is from, I'm pretty sure cedar is toxic to snakes, and I think pine is the other toxic one.

Where are you based AshSmulian? Eucaliptus mulch is popular with keepers...so is Kenaf. Just ensure you use a temp controller with your heat pad. Enjoy your first Ball Python...they're addictive!
