Retained Eye Caps/ Eye concern

Postby gekosin » Fri Sep 12, 2014 7:39 am

Hi All,

Is anyone able to explain how i am able to tell if a snake has retained eye caps?

My rainbow boa's eye is looking a bit strange almost like the eye has a dent in it (not sure exactly how to explain)

If anyone has any advice I would really appreciate it!

Thanks,

See if you can take a close-up picture of the eye in question.

Usually when eye caps are retained, you can just make out the "torn" edges where the skin tore off, leaving behind the eye caps.

But well done for asking first; I have heard horror stories of guys trying to remove retained eye caps where there is none, resulting in blind snakes.

If the eye caps came off, they should be visible on the shedding.

Hi

I have had this on some of my snakes in the past and all I did was to tip some of the water in the water bowl out into the tub and leave it for a day or so.
It has always come right for me when I did this.
If your snake is not in a tub, maybe let it soak in some luke warm water for half an hour or so and see what happens.

I am no expert and only suggest what has worked for me in the past, it might be that my problem was something completely different from your's.

I agree with Danie, I noticed this once before with my boy, I gave him a bath and his eye was back to normal in the morning. I hope that he comes right:)

It can be difficult to tell yes, that's why it's the first thing I check when I remove a sloughed skin. Make sure the eye caps are there.

I've heard of this before with rainbows -- even the "dent." The snakes was fine in the end. Keep the humidity high, just in case, and check his next shed carefully. The caps will be visible, and you may even be able to tell if one was a double from a stuck shed. Good luck!

Thanks for all the replies, I really appreciate it :)

Seems it may have been a bit of dehydration. After the soak in his water bowl and a bit of extra spraying it seems to have come right.

I will just watch his next shed as i want to make 100% sure it is not the retained eye caps
