A.Contortrix Dead

A.Contortrix Dead

Postby venomking » Fri Oct 24, 2014 9:30 am

Good morning all tought I would share this story,so as I was removing my pair of copperheads out of there inclosure I put the both of them in a large container closed the lid and was off cleaning and the next moment I heard a really good scuffle in the container and as I opend the container saw the male going crazy turns out the female had a good nick at him with one fang entering the venom gland and the other behind the neck area a was really upset and hope that he would make it but unfortunately he did not after approx 25min he was gone so they are not imune to there venom :(

-Moved to the correct section, these are certainly not mildly venomous- Wes

Sorry to hear about your loss.

Often it is not the venom that does the killing in these types of situations, but rather the physical trauma of the fangs puncturing a vital organ.

Might the female's fang have punctured the male's brain or (more likely) its spine?

Did the male show any symptoms such as swelling, blistering or necrosis before/after death?

Hi westley Price it seems the female's fang missed his spine but the other fang could have punctured the brain and yes there was a little swelling on the head wound no necrosis or blistering little bleeding aswell .

Does anyone need him maybe for educational purposes?

I've also wondered about this a lot.
If snakes of the same species are not immune to one another's venom, is an individual snake immune to its own venom ?

I have seen snakes of the same species bite each other and die. I have seen snake of the same species bite each other and not die. I have seen a Snouted cobra bite a Cape house snake which lost a huge piece of tissue and still survived. I have seen snakes eat other snakes, regurgitate them and they lived. I have seen snakes bite themselves and die shortly afterwards.

I am still not sure about the answer.

Nice information Bv would be nice to know the facts if it's possible guess youd have to sacrifice a few snakes, doubt any of us would do that

Venomking do you perhaps take the snakes out and place them in containers when you feed?

Yep perhaps she has become well conditioned to feeding in the container and that is why she went for him.
