Feeding

Feeding

Postby Kobus » Thu Jan 26, 2017 8:17 pm

My Corn is 151cm long and weighs 890g. I got him as an adult though about 10cm smaller. He is used taking live rodents.

I used to feed him 2 adult mice a week, but due to unavailability at pet shops I changed to jumper rats. The jumper rats are bigger than the adult mice though.

He only takes 1 jumper rat per week.

I am also in the process of breeding my own mice.

I have 1 male with 2 female. The 1 female had 6 babies 2 weeks ago. The other female is only a small jumper at the moment, but will be able to breed in maybe 2 weeks time.

The 2 small ones of 35g and 45g are being fed 2 x pinkies a week

The pinkies are still the same size as the thickest part of the body.

Am I over feeding or maybe under feeding?

For the adult you may be slightly overfeeding, but not significantly.

With younger snakes feeding once a week is required, but once adult, you may increase the time between feedings to two weeks.

But just like people, all snakes are individuals. I would rather just monitor it's condition. If it looks a bit chubby, cut back and if it looks skinny, feed more regularly.

But he/she sounds like a monster!

For the younger ones for you maintain the feeding regime you are on and maybe skip once feeding a month if you'd like.

Thankx Man.

I will soon upload an image of the adult Corn. Maybe you can tell whether he is overweight.

I did get him as an adult more than a year ago.

Here is a few pics of Sleepy. Maybe someone can recognize the overweight thing better than me.

Nah, he looks fine. Maybe a little tad chunky, but not even close to unhealthily obese.

How did you close those holes? looks like duct tape? Tape is always a bad idea in any snake's cage. I have seen horrific injuries after snakes got stuck in tape. Rather buy some putty or something.

Although it looks like duct tape, it is not.

It is pieces of strong type of denim material. My wife and I glued it with strong Silicone on top of the hole and also at the bottom of the hole. We let it dry for 24hrs.

We are still going to paint the hole cave brown on the inside as well as the outside, which will strengthen the material even more.

Thanx for the comment regarding the weight.

Since I got the snake as an adult, I do not know what type or species it is.

Could you be so kind to try and id it for me. All I know it is a Corn Snake.
