I want to get as substrate for my baby corn cage that new hamster bedding. Its made out of recycled newspaper and its tightly compressed into the sze and shape of rabbit pellets. Its apparently highly odor and moisture absorbent and is dark grey in colour so it'll just look so cool.. Does anyone see how this stuff could be a problem?
It should only be a problem if your cornsnake accidentally swallows it. I have not seen this substrate yet, so am not 100% sure what ill effects there could be, but that's the only 1 I can think of.
That type of substrate will work if you keep the snake well hydrated, and a super keen eye to spot mites (many of these type of substrates tend to give mites a word of hiding places and when you first see them, you might have a huge infestation already). And as BB said loose type substrates may be swallowed with food. I've used carpets for many years now without any problems.( Just keep two carpets for each cage-so you can disinfect the one while the other is in use)
ok, the reason i want this is that its dark and snakes look super cool against a dark background, especially snow corns. and its easy to burrow if they wanna feel more secure.
Maybe i should look for a dark carpet... Really not a fan of the green stuff
oh and i think the chances of being swallowed is not likely, the particles are big, like rbbit pellets. Ill feed them on a mat, so that there wont be the smell of food on the substrate either. however since it is newspaper, if it IS swallowed, it will swell allot, that may be very dangerous
The part that still scares me is the "Its apparently highly odor and moisture absorbent" part. Ok it's made from newspaper so the absorbancy shouldn't be that bad but still... this is designed for rodents. Not for reptiles. Beeg difference.
Artificial intelligence usually beats real stupidity.
Well newspaper isn't your only option. There are plenty of different substrates out there. Each with their own advantages and disadvantages. Look around.

I got some small repti-bark chips. The substrate i wanted was R76.00! i was like "im not paying that for hamster bedding". oh well. i think the bark will look great!
