Gaboon Feeding pics

Last night I was feeding my babies in their new cage, so I thought I'ld snap some shots of them. The one was camera shy and refused to eat, until all was dark, but this one didn't really care.

Great pictures BB, I still think Gaboons are some of the most beautiful snakes. Look how happy he looks with a full tummy. You say they are babies - but they do not look too sall - how big are they? I now know they fangs can get up to 5cm when fully grown, how big would a fully grown Gaboon get?

BB is not available at the moment so I will answer what I can.

These are pure East African Gaboon vipers. I know you are misled by the horns on the nose but these snakes also have them although not as prominent as the others.

The babies are probably about 18 months old and 80 cm long. I am hopeless as judging length, they could be longer. The fang that is shed last night while drinking water is exactly 2 cm long.

Gaboon vipers have been recorded up to 1.8 metres in length although this was a specimen killed many years ago. Normally a specimen of 1.4 metres would be considered very big. They breed at very much the same size as puff adders and males are not that big when they start mating.

Captive bred babies will set you back about R2000 to R2500 each and imports possibly about half of that.

Q ball, body parts cannot be sold locally however if you go to Pakistan and apparently Israel they do pay you there. I offered them my tonsils and appendix but they dont use them for transplants that often it seems because I am still waiting for the call.

BV, what do you mean with the fang that is shed while drinking water, does the fangs also shed or how does it work?

Snakes routinely shed their fangs. They have replacement fangs (like spares) just next to the functional fangs. When the functional fang drops off the new one slots into place and becomes the usable fang.

Snakes which swallow fangs cannot digest them either. If you take some faeces, especially from snakes with large fangs like Gaboon vipers or puff adders, and take it apart you often find the fangs in there.

One of the Gaboon vipers that was at Monte casino had 17 fangs removed from one scat. This often happens if the snake has been on a hunger strike for a while and then decides to feed. The fur "flushes out" the fangs. How they never spike themselves is a mystery to me.

Cleaning cages which have these snakes in them have the risk that you could get "spiked" while cleaning up dry faeces or even just rubbing across the carpet. The fangs are dirty but do not have enough venom on them to be important. It does hurt more than a splinter though.
