Keeping Green Tree Pythons together ??????

Keeping Green Tree Pythons together ??????

Postby Badboyburm » Mon Aug 06, 2007 2:27 pm

Ok to make a long story short I have had a green tree for a while now and just got a male for the female over the weekend. these snakes are now together in a cage 1.8meters in lenght, I know that they have only been in this cage together for a while but show no aggression to each other what so ever. My Question is can you keep these animals together in one cage some people have told me No and some has said Yes, is there anyone out there with lots of green tree experience that can help with advise am I doing a completely wronf thing buy having these animals together in one cage???????.

The cage is more than big enough for two green trees the setup is right the tempreture and humidity is right, I know feeding them in the cage will be a challenge but again can you keep them together in one cage ???????.

They look absolutely stunning together in that cage .

I don't see why there should be a problem if you keep them together.

Oh and if there no pics, it never happened.

In the past I have kept up to 3 Green tree pythons in one cage without a problem.

As you point out feeding is a problem but then again so is providing multiple basking sites.

Do not ever try to put two males in one cage. They will tear each other apart come breeding time.

It does make sense to rather have one cage per animal but if not this will not be detrimental if you monitor their feeding and overall health.

Thanks for the quick reply the left hand side of the cage is about 30-31 degrees and the right is 24-26 degrees, the cage is nice and long and i thought when feeding time comes i will feed one on the left and one on the right so they cant get to each other and bite and so on.

Hi there
Just saw your post. First of all how big are they and are they a pair or 2 males? Adult males will kill each other! I had 2 males together for about 5 years. They were subadult when I got them and were fine together and suddenly I came in one morning and the one was ripped up very badly! Managed to treat him and pull him through but 2 males together are a definate NO!!!

Hi Chantal

It is a male and a female, both older that yearlings, but the male is a little bit bigger than the female.

Thanks for the reply '

last question does anyone think i should have kept them together?????

Hey chaps.

Sorry to dredge up this old thread, and after not hearing from me for so long, but I have some questions about housing these snakes together.

So, it looks like Badboyburm ended up housing them separately, any idea why? Did they have issues?

At the moment I only have one yearling Sorong GTP, but I intend on getting a few more at some point in the near future.

So, I live in the UK. And space is a premium. So I would much rather make a big cage for a breeding trio than try to have 3 small cages that would feel too small for adult snakes.

What do you guys reckon?
Is there any new info since this thread started?

I did find this youtube video where a guy in Australia keeps a few in big cages:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gg71mIaBGnY

In this PDF, Rico Walder (a US bigshot in GTPs) mentions that some people keep them in trios:

How do you manage feeding time if there are 2 or 3 hungry faces looking at you.
I have kept snakes together in the past, but they were smaller species that were easier to move around when feeding.

Is it worth looking into this, or should I sack up and just try and build the biggest individual cages that I can?

I have no experience with this species, but from what I can tell that should be fine as long as the enclosure is spacious enough.
It is obviously ideal to have animals housed individually, but I believe that one can slip by with some species, this being one of them, provided there is only one male.

Gorgeous python by the way.

Thanks.
Yes, that is my guess too. And I have seen lots of references to people doing it, just haven't seen anything that says how they manage feeding time without casualties.
