Bitis species mating

Postby Bushviper » Wed Nov 07, 2007 8:49 am

Someone I know has Puff adders and Horned adder (Bitis caudalis) in the same cage. Despite my warning he left them together. A few nights ago he checked on them during the night and found this:

Image

He thought the puff adder was mating with the horned adder because he knew for a fact the puff adder was a male. The puff adder is also small and probably a yearling. It is quite obvious that the Horned adder was mating with the puff adder and with them both being male nothing can come of this.

This was recorded at the Transvaal museum as well and the male puff adder was very indignant and wanted to kill the male horned adder.

It is strange that this should happen twice and in both cases there was not a female horned adder in the vicinity. Captivity does strange things to people and animals.

This is what heppens when you keep snakes on kinky navy blue velvet.
How would males mate? Would the one's hemipene be inserted into the other's inverted hemipene? I'm not even going to suggest the other available option.

Froot they would have used the other available option.

"Bubbas" hemipenes would not be inserted into the tail where the hemipenes are but into the cloaca towards the body itself.

Maybe horned adders have a homosexual streak. I once had 5 male horned adders in a cage and had to remove the one because it kept trying to mate with the others and they were freaking out.

Hence the name I suppose.

Or is that because of those protrusions on the head?

Has anyone ever found this in other species?

Apparently NATCON is road cruising in Hillbrow at night to remove some specimens flashing motorists too.
They are to be reclassified as 'horny adders'.

Luckily he is at a better home now and possibly he gets the girlfriend he was lusting after.
