Habitat quiz!

Many of you can identify the snakes, but how good are you when it comes to the localities? 10 shots covering SA only...so where were they taken?

I'll wait a while before I give the correct answers. And before that I'll give the clues by stating what occurs there. Froot, you had 1 correct and 3 (nr. 1,3 ;) and 9) in roughly the right area.

I wondered if those red hairs were going to attract some attention, but no, it wasn't Nelspruit. 4 is probably the most difficult and least seen one of the lot. 5 is Kosi Bay (Zululand) and 9 is Port Nolloth, and as Froot said, 10 is Ndumo in Zululand as well.

Well done... but I have to ask how you got the B.inornata habitat right? Did I show you the photos? No 3 is a bit far out though... So here's the list of shots with some of their reptiles:

1 Swartberg Pass - Red adder (B.rubida), Puff adder (B.arientans), Red-sided skink (T.homalocephala), etc
2 Namaqua NATIONAL PARK - Black spitting cobra (N.nigricincta), Many-horned adder (B.cornuta),Puff adder (B.arientans), Beetz's Tiger snake (T.beetzi), etc
3 Augrabies NATIONAL PARK - Black spitting cobra (N.nigricincta), Horned adder (B.caudalis), supposedly Desert mountain adder (B.xeropaga), etc
4 Compassberg - This is the highest point in SA outside the Drakensberg mountain range - Cape Cobra (N.nivea), Puff adder (B.arientans), supposedly Plain mountain adder (B.inornata), etc
5 Kosi Bay NATURE RESERVE- Gaboon adder (B.gabonica), Green mamba (D.angusticeps), Forest Cobra (N.melanoleuca), etc
6 Gauteng Highlands - Rinkhals (H.hemachatus)
7 Lephalale - Black mamba (D.polylepis), Moz. spitting cobra (N.mossambica), Snouted cobra (N.annulifera), Puff adder (B.arietans), etc
8 Mapungubwe NATIONAL PARK - Black mamba (D.polylepis), Moz. spitting cobra (N.mossambica), Snouted cobra (N.annulifera), Puff adder (B.arietans), etc
9 Port Nolloth - Namaqua dwarf adder (B.schneideri), Cape Cobra (N.nivea), etc
10 Ndumo NATURE RESERVE - Black mamba (D.polylepis), Moz. spitting cobra (N.mossambica), Snouted cobra (N.annulifera), Forest Cobra (N.melanoleuca), Puff adder (B.arietans), Southern Stilleto snake (A.bibronii), Boomslang (D.typus), Vine snake (T.capensis) etc

That ought to cover most of the venomous snakes... so if anyone feels like expanding their horizons they can look at what lizzards occur there as well! Lizzards are more fun to catch, and easier to make large species lists with!

Nice one, I enjoyed that. What regions are 7, 8 and 10 in? I've heard of a couple of those places but not sure where in the provinces they are.

7 - is Ellisras / Lephalale in Limpopo province
8 - Mapungubwe is SA's most northernly spot in Limpopo province. That view point where that photo was taken looks out on Zimbabwe to the right and Botswana on the left.
10 - Ndumo is in Northern KZN. It is an amazing place for birding, butterflying and herping, but most of the roads are only accesible to staff and with a 4X4
