Bitis caudalis feeding interval

Bitis caudalis feeding interval

Postby pburi » Fri Mar 02, 2012 8:45 am

Hi there,

I have a Namaqualand caudalis CB 06/2011. I had to force feed it once and then it took pinkies by itself. Last time it took a pinkie was mid December. I keep it in a room where the temperature at night had a minimum of approx. 13-14°C for a few days. It was very inactive during this time and also shed in this period. Since having shed it is very active again and I tried to feed multiple times but so far without success. Would you already force feed it or still wait and try if it eats itself? If not really needed I do not want to force feed as this is stress for the animal. (I have also a cornuta next to its cage which ates all the time)

Thank you for your advice in advance

Does the animal look like it has lost condition?
You know, you can touch a stick of dynamite, but if you touch a venomous snake it’ll turn around and bite you and kill you so fast it’s not even funny.

Try force feeding it again if you can do it quickly with the minimum stress. If you can scent the pink with a lizard this might also help. The B. caudalis from that area prey mainly on lizards and geckos as babies.
It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Those who are afraid to ask are ashamed of learning.

The animal does not really look as it has lost condition. It is moving around actively in the cage.

I would try a lizard before force feeding a pinky.
