New to SA Reptiles and looking forward to it. I have many questions and reptiles to find but that will come.

I brought my tarantula (Brazilian red & white) to a friends house one day, and he fell in love with the idea. 6 months down the line, we now have a 2.5 meter tank that I have divided into 5 sections. The tank is 600 high and 400 wide. 2 sections are large and the other 3 are a bit smaller. They were all gonna be for tarantulas but now we have decided to make it a mixed tank. So in the 1st small section is our existing tarantula, then in the second we have bought a small Gooty Sapphire tarantula (P. metalika). Then we wanted to get some reptiles so i have set up a desert theme and just bought 2 leopard geckos. One is a high yellow and the new little one im not sure yet. They are separate at the moment cause the new one is still too small and im worried she might get trampled on.
The next two sections in the tank are still open. We really want to get a pair of day geckos in one of the big sections but they are hard to find. I have already set that section up with an Aztec theme incl. plants, vines, bamboo, sphagnum moss and all the necessary goodies. It looks really awesome.
With the final section we also want to get something exotic. The options for that section were terrapins, panther chameleon or just another tarantula. But nothing that is too high maintenance (I think the terrapins & Chameleon are high maintenance so I will decide at a later stage). Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated!

Does anyone know where I can get a beautiful Madagascan Day Gecko? Or possibly a pair.

I do have some good knowledge on reptiles but im sure I can learn a lot more here as well. Looking forward to exploring the website and gaining more knowledge.

Great idea! I would not go with a terrapin, as far as I know they are still Illegal. Why not try some stick insects? Or a snake? The options are endless. :) Have fun

I will post some pics in a few min.

I thought about a snake but we have some people around that are not so keen on the idea. For some its a religious thing so I don't want to upset anyone.

With the terrapins, the local pet store nearby has a few for sale but it looks like they get quite big eventually so i dont want to cramp them and decrease their quality of life.

Stick insects might be a good idea. I have never thought of that. Are they difficult to find? and keep?

We also liked the Fire-bellied toads but im not sure if they legal and i would have no idea where to start looking for them.

Tim @ www.petbugs.co.za sells stick/leaf insects.

I have platannas (African clawed frogs), it may be worth trying to keep them, very easy to keep and eat quite a variety of food and mine are so use to me by now they eat out my hand. Where are you from?

Chameleons will not like that cage as if is too small and not well ventilated. Day geckos will be your best bet. There are quite a few available in KZN at the moment. Go look at the bigger pet shops.

@ Lillypod - the photos have been sent, let me know if you receive them or not.

@Bushviper - Ja chameleons were my last choice as i agree that they will not enjoy it too much. I was not aware that people can transport Day geckos so i will see if i can find someone who is willing to send me some

Thanks for the advice

Welcome to the Forum :)

Like Bushviper Said Chameleons require large enclosures that are vented, i advice if you want to get one to get a terrarium with at least 3 sides mesh and no smaller than 45cm x 45 cm x 60cm. Geckos or tarantula are your best bet but seeing as the Cage is 400 wide i think that the sections may be small seeing that you have 5 sections in there (Assuming that the 400 is measures in mm :) )

We used to have Stick insects at Butterfly world when i worked there, we fed them a certain plant that was found in a field nearby! they are quite low maintenance, require some Humid and heating conditions depending on the type but are pretty hardy But they also require some sizable cages.

What size is your bigger compartments in with? is the compartments waterproof?

P.S.Just re-size your pix to 640x480 and they should be fine, i use paint for that.

Yes the compartments are waterproof i made sure of that just in case. The desert theme section that you see in the photo is too small for the leo's so that will be moved while i decide what to do with them.

I managed to re size the pics so here they are
