the Tropidolaemus confusion

Postby herpaworld » Tue Aug 28, 2007 3:10 am

good morning south-africa,

the whole family of Tropidolaemus is in badly need of revision. many scientist have tried it but made it actually more confusing. we have just finished the first paper, out of a series of tree regarding systematics and reorganization of the Tropidolaemus genus, and we have described some new full species. check Zootaxa for more informations on it, i will update you, as soon as it has been published (probably within the next 6-8 weeks). well, meanwhile - i will show you guys some pictures (without any systematic comment to it). all this animals on the pictures you see here, are already cb- some of them already F3 generation.

the believe, Tropidolaemus is a delicate species and hard to maintain is just not the full truth. if one is willing to provide this stunning, old world pit-viper with their needs, he will find out, it is a hard and rewarding display animal with a very good chance in reproducing them.

there you go:

I see you only have one juvenile male picture. I have been told they are much prettier than the females.

Is this true for Philippine specimens because these females are absolutely stunning?

no, its certainly not true at all. most males, also from other populations around south east asia. the females are the "lookers" the males, usually looks very similar. except the blue variation from negros, all are green, with more or less red dots.

i will try to post some pictures of males...

Look forward to your paper; I guess as it stands the two species T.wagleri & T.huttoni are pretty well geographically isolated. I have always thought that wagleri may one day reveal a species complex.

e.g. in a similar that some members of Vipera and Bitis do.

i posted the link, unfortunately, i cant set up the whole paper for upload. that is against the agreement with the publisher, but of course, if somebody ask directly the author, this is a different story. if somebody is interested, he still need to send a email.

sorry, but rules are rules guys
