Help with Emperor Scorpion Caging Needs

Help with Emperor Scorpion Caging Needs

Postby F1refly » Thu Oct 14, 2010 6:05 pm

I have a Large Hexagonal Fish tank that I want to know if I can use with a Emperor Scorpion.
The tank itself is rather tall and is made from a wooden frame and has glass panels. The lid is also made from wood.
The sizes are as follows:
7o or so cm high
55 cm wide

I would also like to know if I can use potting soil and how much soil to put in the bottom?
I don't have the Scorpion yet and don't know if I will get it but it is better to be prepared.
Also, would it keep the humidity with the wooden lid? Or would I have to buy a Proper glass tank/cage?

No need to use such a high cage as scorpions cant climb glass and hence you will waste a lot of space. They require a humidity of 70 -80% so a glass tank would be better. I would use peat as a substrate but you dont need it to be too deep as long as you provide rocks or logs for it to hide under.

I don't have allot of knowladge on scorpions, but What I can help you with is you need a heat source either heat pad or Infra red heat bulb, a heat bulb will work great because your tank is high and it will help with the humidity, Did you know if you use a black light on a scorpion it glow's, something to do with fosfor (Like I said don't know allot)emperor scorpions usually glow a ocean green/blue colour, Next is substrate that most guy's use sand, you need a hide with moist peatmoss if your going the sand option or just fill the entire tank with moist moss and like spiders they need water or gel, they eat pinkies and crickets.
as long as you keep quiet, no one will notice that your dumb

Hi Firefly

I have got my adult emperor in a 600 wide glass tank. I used Canadian Peat (about 5cm deep), put a large log (which he has made his burrow under), fake rock hide, water bowl and another small log. I then added some Sphagnum Moss on top of the peat. I also stuck a small heating pad to the side of the enclosure (I keep the enclosure between 24 and 27). I mist the enclosure every 2 or 3 days to keep up the humidity. My guy seam happy and healthy. And yes, they look very pretty under a black/uv light.

The problem here is that I can't get hold of all that stuff. I just need to know if that tank will be okay as it doesn't have a tight fitting lid. I have bought some 100 percent organic Potting Soil that is peat based, Can this be used along with the tank. Otherwise I will have to go to Bloemfontein and buy the stuff. I will have to go anyway but I need to know if my tank and the potting soil is suitable. I will have to get a light in Bloem though.

Your tank should be fine. Just be careful with using potting soil as it can contain parasites. Also you can get all your supplies from www.reptilecity.com and they'll deliver anywhere. Try not use a light even in a high enclosure as it will be difficult to keep the humidity up. A heating pad on the side of the enclosure will work allot better.

Cant I just ut the otting soil in the Microwave for a minute or so? Or is there still a chance that parasites will survive?

Leaving it in the oven for an hour or 2 should work. I wouldn't put it in the microwave.

Is it also alright if the Potting Soil has small pieces of bark in it?
