Scorpion law - Keeping,breeding,selling

Postby Salomao » Fri Jul 15, 2016 11:11 am

Hi Everyone,

I have been trying to find out what the law is around keeping, breeding, and selling scorpions in the South African market and was wondering if any of you might have an insight.

Besides having a registered company with a VAT number etc, what are the laws around scorpions?

From what I could gather so far:
1. There are a few local species which are protected and require a permit.
2. You are allowed to keep the un-protected local species BUT are not allowed to breed or sell them.
2. You are allowed to breed and sell species not native to South Africa? Do you require a permit and anything else?

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

There are a list of species that are protected and you may not keep them without a permit. These are known as TOPS species.
Depending on the province, other indigenous scorpions may be kept and bred with no restrictions. Some provinces are more strict.
You are allowed to keep all species which are not indigenous to SA however you would have to give a decent explanation of where they were acquired as imports are rarely if ever granted.
It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Those who are afraid to ask are ashamed of learning.
