Dispholidus typus enclosure

Dispholidus typus enclosure

Postby Dispholidus » Wed Sep 14, 2011 10:40 am

Just want to get some suggestions and ideas/tips for building a enclosure for Dispholidus typus (pair). I want to build one that would be suitable for my babies until adulthood. What size would I look at? (I was thinking of 120 L X 80 D x 120H - will this be sufficient?)

What kind of decor and substrate would I use and how do I handle the lighting aspect - seeing that the guys are arboreal and can burn themselves on exposed lighting.

Thanx

Boomslang are not difficult to keep. Babies do well just in a small exoterra cage with some branches to climb. Adults would need a long cage with numerous twigs and branches. They require less height than what you would expect but like to stretch out on a branch so the cage needs to be about 1.8 metres in length.

If they reach the 1-2 meter mark the cage will have to be 1.5 m for the first snake and an extra 0,75 m² for every extra snake. Height is a minimum of 70 cm and width should be the size of a door frame( 75 cm ).
This is only for Western Cape people so the rest of you need not worry.
If I'm gonna be an old, lonely man, I'm gonna need a thing, you know, a hook, like that guy on the subway who eats his own face. So I figure I'll be Crazy Man with a Snake, y'know. Crazy Snake Man. And I'll get more snakes, call them my babies, kids won't walk past my place, they will run. "Run away from Crazy Snake Man, " they'll shout!”

I may have gone a bit overboard but I like to give my snake allot of roaming space here is my cage 1.8H 1.8L 75D. I've only got a male at the moment but still looking for a female for him. I've also got my puff adders in the bottom of the cage.

Are the Puffys in the Same Cage? Meaning are they dwelling at the bottom without anything separating them from the Boomslang?

Yes, they are, and I know there has been some cases where the boomslang have eaten other snakes but my puffies are to big for the boomslang to eat and they have been living happily together for some time now.

Cleaning time must be a b*tch with Boomslangs and Puffies co-habitating :O

Not to mention feeding time!

Very nice cage though :D
One of the most tragic things I know about human nature is that all of us tend to put off living. We are all dreaming of some magical rose garden over the horizon instead of enjoying the roses that are blooming outside our windows today.
