Good to hear you finally got some food into him! Males are much more tricky than females (snake ways not people ways). Keep trying every 4-7 days until he starts to gain some weight and then you can increase the feeding intervals.
You would think paper towel would be a good substrate, but unless you use like 20 sheets at a time, it will not hold enough moisture to keep his enclosure humid enough, especially with a heating pad under it.
