Hedgehog Breeders Gauteng

Postby purefire9 » Thu Jul 11, 2013 1:40 pm

Hi there,

I would like to know where i can maybe find breeders of hedgehogs in Gauteng?
I would prefer not buying one from a pet store.

Also, im confused as to the permit issue, does one need a permit for a hedgehog or not?

Thanks in advance!

African hedgehogs need permits, I think the others don't.

As far as I know you do not need permits for African pygmy hedgehogs (those most commonly kept as pets and are not found wild in South Africa, but apparently a hybrid of some species - not sure which ones) and lesser hedgehogs (tenrecs), but you will need one for native species of hedgehogs.

I might be wrong though, I do not know if the laws are different in Gauteng regarding hedgehogs.

Lillypod is correct. The African pygmy hedgehog is a hybrid from the White-bellied (Atelerix albiventris) and the Algerian (A. algirus) hedgehogs. They are legal in all provinces except in the Cape provinces as far as I know, although a few pop up on gumtree down there every now and then

This is a genuine cry for help. Anyone who has other hedgehogs and wants to give this one a good home please do it.
It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

Those who are afraid to ask are ashamed of learning.
