I saw a picture of this bite, looks bad. I think the reporter made a mistake on either the locality or the snake specie here, there are no Fer de Lance in California.

Nope can't be a B. asper, more like C. atrox. Some might say karma for the number of snakes he has eaten in his show. I say $h1t happens.

The Bothrops atrox has hemotoxin which causes tissue damage and if the viper injected a large amount of venom that could easily happen.

"Hemotoxins" do not cause tissue damage. As the name implies it destroys the blood.
It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.
