I have always done mine after, but before could work well as long as joints are sealed with silicone after assembly.

Better yet, seal couple coats before assembly and couple coats after AND silicone sealed joints!

There are different levels of "sealing" , to fully waterproof the cage varnish is not the right product. Most silicone's usually do not stick to plastics either which is what varnish is so that will not really work well. A cheap and fast option with good results is to use Phenolic Film Faced Ply, varnishing the edges and sealing the joints with Zavlar.

Thanks I'm going to seal them before building, its also a bit easier moving board than cages.

One other thin do I need to seal the backboard as well?
