uvb light location

uvb light location

Postby dannylomb » Sat Oct 23, 2010 8:09 pm

Hi,

What is the ideal location to place a uvb light.
With much consideration I decided not to use a flexarium, I already use one to keep my reptiles when I`m cleaning or doing maintenance. I decided to use my welding skills to build a steel frame and fine steel mesh.

The question comes up where will I place the uvb lighting I have read at the top on the side, I was thinking a tube at the top or a mercury vapour bulb at the top it will need to be located correctly not the burn the Chameleon or heat the mesh and also burning the animal.

What works for you guys?

I would put it outside the enclosure, just to be safe.

You should use the tube because it covers more of the cage.If you can find a UVB tube that is the right size to the cage then you should use that one that covers the hole cage.

So let's say I use the exo terra 76cm tube and then I have to build the cage 76 x 76 x 150 for a adult Chameleon and I can place the tube at the top.

If you use a tube, just remember that if it's inside than there is a chance that it would be pulled of

I heard that`s not a good idea. I want to fit the tube on top of the cage with the clamp's included with the ballast kit.

It can work but the cage is high, maybe you should think of mounting it at the back or side, around 30 cm away from the top, I'm not entirely sure what will the best option be, but I know that someone has tried something similar somewhere

If you have the money you could use a few to cover the whole cage but what Urucone said about puting it on the side is a good idea.

It sounds like something worth experimenting with I just need to decide on a size, what would you guys recommend is the ideal size for a adult Chameleon?

I already plan to use the exo terra jungle type habitat glass terrarium for hatchlings and the screen cage from exo terra for juvenilesm

I've kept veiled chameleons in a 900 x 450 x 600 and it was more than adequate, I would say something around 600 x 450 x 600, I think it will be a reasonable size for an adult veil, On a cage size like that you can put an tube UVB on the top with a heat emitter with a reflector without endangering the animal. There is a exo terra cage in that size.

I'm planning on keeping veiled chameleons I favour that screen cage if I can use that it would make my job a whole lot easier I wanted to use flexariums but the nylon plus the little visibility just agitates me.

You can look into a basking light, but at the end of the day you need heat for day and night, your heat source can be anything from Heat emitters, infra red lights or basking lights, nice thing about emitters is if a little misdirected mist hits it, it doesn’t blow up, some UVB tubes contain a certain amount of UVB and UVA, so if you’re using a basking light well I can’t see any use for it except heat.
